PRODUCT REVIEW: NOLA SKINSENTIALS

About a month and a half ago, I logged into my Twitter account after over a year of not being on there, and came across a conversation that led me down a rabbit hole which then led me to an influencers page who had discount codes for beauty and skincare brands, one of them being Nola Skinsentials.

Naturally, I went straight to their website, stalked the Instagram account, and read tons of reviews before purchasing and using the 15% discount code I just so happened to stumble upon.

If you’ve never heard of Nola Skinsentials, NS (according to its website) offers health-conscious millennial’s and people of color a skincare and cosmetics line that is made with skin-loving ingredients optimized for a glowing complexion. All products are vegan, cruelty-free, and hand-crafted. NS is also a black-owned, woman-owned business! Which is also one of the reasons I was more than happy to support and purchase products from the company.

NS carries a wide range of products from skincare, body care, and makeup. But because you all know I LOVE skincare products, of course that’s what I went for first.

Here’s what I ordered and why:

  • Restore Serum: The restore serum is described as being for skin that’s freaking out. The ingredient list includes, Glycolic acid which I talked about here, witch hazel, and essential oils. I don’t typically use “serums” and my skin wasn’t exactly freaking out, but the ingredients were ones that my skin usually really loves so I wanted to give it a try.
  • Botanical Oil: According to the NS, the Botanical Oil was made to speed up cell turnover and gently exfoliate your skin. The Ingredients include, Glycolic Acid (bet you can’t tell how much I live for GA), Neem oil which is great for treating dry skin and wrinkles, healing wounds, stimulating collagen production, reducing scars, and treating acne. And Tea Tree Oil, which is my favorite oil to use for stubborn pimples that pop up here and there. My skin looooovvveeessss oils! Loves them, so I got this to add to the arsenal of oils that I have. Also, because I have scarring from acne in the past, I really wanted to use this product because of the Neem oil which is perfect for reducing scars.
  • Glycolic Intensive Masque: Ok. My name is Kei and I am OBSESSED with exfoliating. This jelly like mask is made with glycolic acid, aloe and pomegranate. If you want to learn more about glycolic acid, make sure to check out this post.
  • Charcoal Clay Mask: I loooove a charcoal mask! Charcoal has so many great benefits, but for your skin it’s perfect for congested skin and digging out those nasty impurities.

I’ve been using these products (sans the Glycolic Intensive Masque) for a little over a month now, and unfortunately the Restore Serum and the Botanical Oil really broke me out. I was really excited to use both, especially considering it was a mix of products that I typically use, but no, they didn’t work for me. I tried using them on an off, but each time I’d wake up with pimples and have to reverse the damage that had occurred. This last time, I ended up with some cystic acne on my cheek which is when I decided, ok… I really have to stop using these products. I haven’t used the Glycolic Intensive Masque because I’m a bit afraid to considering my skins condition after using the others. I will say the Charcoal Mask really works for me. I love that it doesn’t dry my skin out, and leaves it feeling really soft.

Although these products didn’t work for me, I would definitely recommend anyone to try them. I love that the products are plant-based and cruelty-free, but also that the creator Jane Ormon, set out to make health conscious products free of ingredients that will/can dry out your skin and potentially harm your protective barrier. Also, if you go to the NS website and Instagram, you will see the products have waaayyyy more positive reviews than negative ones. This is one of the first times a product hasn’t worked for me, and I’m chalking it up to the fact that everything isn’t for everyone. Your skin will react different to certain products being mixed together. While my skin loved Tea Tree Oil… I’ve learned that it doesn’t love tea tree mixed with neem. And you know what… that’s ok. I also always order sample sizes for this very reason… you just never know how your skin will react, and who wants to feel like they’ve wasted their money?

I do plan on ordering the Iconic Elixir. It’s literally their most popular and reviewed product.
